When do we feel most empowered? when do you feel most confident? that moment when you are in “control of your life or a situation” … It is that moment when we do not feel marginalized, shy or with fear, instead you feel comfortable, in capacity and in disposition, ascertain, reassured, free to be and express yourself. Our sense of empowerment can take many forms that is reflected in the way we think, in how we speak, how we stand and move, how we treat ourselves and interact with others. It is reflected in how we touch and be touched, through our clothing and make up or just being naked. Moreover, is reflected when we create or destroy or when we help and support others, etc. The dimensions are multiple. Can these dimensions be captured naturally through photography? One thing is capturing what the photographer perceives a person to be in an empowered moment, interpreting a face, a posture, a context. Another is requesting a person to model to pose in an empowered moment as understood by the photographer. Yet another is to capture a moment when the person being photographed is actually feeling empowered. This last one is the one I am interested in and requires a collaborative work between the model and the photographer to allow the “sense of empowerment” to be expressed and to avoid the potential bias of the lens.
